In a bit of a turn of events during this chaotic awards season, the original frontrunner “Anora” came back in full force this weekend, winning the Producers Guild of America best film (precursor for Oscars best picture) and Directors Guild of America awards for Sean Baker (who got both PGA and DGA wins). As a reference, “Oppenheimer” won PGA and DGA last year before getting the Oscars for best director and picture.
Both PGA and DGA happened Saturday night. On Friday the winners of the Critics Choice Awards dropped, where “Anora” was also picked as best picture, so a great weekend all around for Baker.
The Golden Globes kind of threw a wrench in “Anora” hitting the top spot since it was shut out there, as “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez” won. Let’s see what happens with BAFTA in a week’s time.
