• Two time Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) returns to Studio 8H tonight for some fun as both the host and musical guest. This is Chalamet’s third time hosting, the last time back in 2023 right as the WGA/SAG strikes were ending and he was promoting Wonka.
• Chalamet is the fourteenth actor to appear on the show as both host and musical guest, though he is one of the few who is primarily known for acting and does not have an established singing career of his own (the only other person seemingly being Lily Tomlin, but don’t quote me on that for sure).
• After this episode, the show goes on a short hiatus and returns on Sunday, February 16 with a giant 50th anniversary celebration. In the meantime, NBC is gearing up for the release of a new documentary, Ladies and Gentlemen…50 Years of SNL Music. It’s co-directed by Oz Rodriguez and Questlove, and features amazing footage and interviews from several hosts who pulled double duty on the show like Dua Lipa, Mick Jagger, Miley Cyrus, and Bad Bunny. It also features interviews with artists like Jack White, who had to fill in at a moment’s notice in 2020, or Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine whose performance served as a protest against the host of their episode (then-presidential candidate Steve Forbes).
• The documentary will also touch on moments like the Funky 4 + 1’s 1981 performance (the first hip-hop performance on the show), Elvis Costello’s infamous “Radio Radio” stunt, Ashlee Simpson’s lip synch jig, Kanye West’s 2018 meltdown, and Sinéad O’Connor’s brave and unfairly maligned 1992 performance.
