Finally done with work and now can make this list. Honestly not that surprised with the nominations compared to previous years but that doesn’t mean we didn’t lack in subs and surprises.
– Acting snubs: Denzel Washington in Gladiator II in supporting actor despite precursors; the same with Angelina Jolie in Maria, Pam Anderson in The Last Showgirl, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Hard Truths, and Margaret Qualley in The Substance. Daniel Craig in Queer and Sebastian Stan were always teetering on that fifth best actor spot, and Stan ended up getting it, so a snub for Craig.
– Nosferatu overperforming with four crafts nominations, Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Production Design
– I’m Still Here breaking into best picture was a surprise, especially over September 5 and Sing Sing which were battling for that last spot.
– Edward Berger‘s snub for best director in Conclave has pretty much buried any chances of it winning best picture, sadly. Looks like the surprise entry here was James Mangold for A Complete Unknown in his stead.
– Challengers getting shut out completely. Luca movies did not fare well with the Academy last year.
