Prince William reminded fans that even the royals don’t always get it right while reflecting on a past gift he gave wife Princess Kate Middleton.

“I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once. She’s never let me forget that,” William, 42, shared on a recent appearance on BBC Radio Five Live, according to the Mirror. “That was early on in the courtship that was — I think that sealed the deal. It didn’t go well. Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars, it seemed like a good idea at the time.”

This isn’t the first time William shared the story about the “awful” gift. In 2020, the Prince of Wales listed the worst gift ideas during an episode of the “Peter Crouch” podcast.

“I wrapped them. They were really nice,” William told the retired soccer player at the time. “I even tried convincing myself by saying, ‘These are amazing! Look how far you can see!’ And she’s looking at me going, ‘But they’re binoculars. What’s going on?’”

Despite gifting Kate, 42, with silly presents in the past, he recently presented her with heartfelt tokens of appreciation from fans after the Princess of Wales announced her cancer diagnosis in March.

The following month, members and staff of St. Michael’s Church of England High School flooded Prince William’s arms with gifts for Kate as tokens of their love and wishes for a speedy and healthy recovery.

“We didn’t want to give flowers but something significant to represent the theme of the day,” the education establishment’s senior mental health lead, Kerry Whitehouse, told People at the time.

So, staff members gave Kate Lego sunflowers because “building things is therapeutic and sunflowers represent happiness, positivity and strength” and sunflower seeds “to sow seeds of positivity.”

Kerry told the outlet that William thanked her for the thoughtful present and gushed that the “Lego would go down well in the house.”

The warmth that surrounded Kate seemingly helped her fight cancer after she rejoiced on September 9 that she hit a milestone and completed preventative chemotherapy treatment.

“Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes,” Kate said in a video announcement at the time. “To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey — I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand.”

In December, a source exclusively told Life & Style that Kate’s health battle made her and William “stronger as a couple and now they’re more in love than ever before.” The insider shared that Kate was able to fully focus on her health while William took on primary duties of their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

“He stepped up in all aspects and was able to balance the family’s day-to-day activities and his royal duties,” the source dished. “Kate was truly amazed. She says she grew fonder of William and they developed an even deeper connection.”
