George Clooney opened up about an important lesson he learned about his career after playing Batman.

The 63-year-old actor played DC’s iconic Caped Crusader in 1997′s Batman & Robin, which was largely panned upon its release.

In a new interview, he opened up about his early excitement to play the comic book character and how his outlook changed after the movie underperformed.

Speaking to GQ, George reflected on learning how to be more selective with the roles he accpeted.

“When I first got to the place where I could pick a movie, I took everything that came my way. Because I didn’t understand that I was going to be held responsible for the movie,” he said. “So I get offered Batman & Robin, I call my friends like, ‘I’m going to be Batman!’”

He continued, explaining, “You don’t really think it through. And then after I did that for three films, where they didn’t really work, I was like: Oh, I’m going to be held responsible. I need to go back to: good script, good director, if I’m allowed to pick.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he revealed a huge role that he competed with Brad Pitt for.
