Soon after President Biden announced he was stepping down, and the endorsements started rolling in for Vice President Kamala Harris, one particular endorsement captured the meme zeitgeist.
Charli XCX simply tweeted, “kamala IS brat”, and the Harris campaign embraced this by following the singer back and changing their twitter header banner to fit the aesthetic of such a designation.
This also opened the floodgates to meme reactions and thinkpieces explaining what a brat summer is. Per Charli’s own definition, “You’re just that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels herself but then also maybe has a breakdown but kind of parties through it, is very honest, is very blunt, a little bit volatile. Does dumb things but it’s brat, you’re brat. That’s brat.”
