Last night, hashtag “#ホラーじゃないのに異常に怖かった映画” (This isn’t a horror film but it’s terrifying) was on Japanese Twitter trend. I picked up some of the interesting ones, including both Japanese and western films, and translated them!

    Seven (1995)
“Gotta be Seven. Through the film there were so many gore scenes, but at the climax scene it was just only “that”. Barely anything was shown, but whoever saw it could definitely feel the despair. Isn’t that amazing?”

    Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
“I watched it because I thought it was a dark fantasy movie, and was shocked when a scary creature appeared.”

    Furueru Shita (1980)
“A true story based on the author’s daughter who struggled with an illness. However, the depiction was as scary as The Exorcist. This masterpiece that opened up a new expression of horror films was directed by Yoshitarou Nomura who also directed Yatsuhakamura (Village of Eight Gravestones, 1977).

    The Father (2020)
“It was so scary I never want to see it again. Probably the scariest one I’ve seen in the last 10 years. But definitely the best movie I’ve seen this year.”

    Caterpillar (2010)
“A movie adaptation of Edogawa Ranpo’s Imomushi (The Caterpillar). A story of a war hero who lost his limbs returned to home. Food and sex were only two things he could enjoy. Then his wife’s sadistic feeling has awaken… ‘Caterpillar’ also means a type of an army tank.”

    Gone Girl (2014)
“Can’t say the reason because there would be spoilers.”

    The Truman Show (1994)
    “This was fucking scary.”

    Whiplash (2014)
    “This film was CRAZY.”

Requiem for a Dream (2000) and Climax (2018)
“Two films about drugs. His arm became gangrenous because of his dream as he woke up and broke down in tears, and in Climax there were more zombies than an actual zombie movie.”

    Johnny Got His Gun (1971)
“He lost his senses of sight, hearing, smell, and couldn’t speak. Both arms and legs were amputated. He is still conscious, but the doctors think he wasn’t and he has no way to let them know. Just thinking about it makes me want to go crazy.”

    Dumbo (1941)
“I think I saw it back when I was in kindergarten. The scene where Dumbo was high and hallucinated was scary.”

    Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
“The misery of war, the ugliness of humans who are in desperate situation, and then that last scene. I can’t watch it again. This film should be shown in every country currently at war.”

    ONTD, what’s your scary non-horror film(s)?
