What? The Archibald prize is considered the most prestigious Australian portraiture prize and was put together after a bequest from J. F. Archibald, the first prize being awarded in 1921 and is administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Even more Two other prizes are awarded within the Archibald event. The Packing Room Prize established in 1992 and is awarded by the staff who install the portraits in the gallery. And the People’s Choice established in 1988 and voted on by the public who view the finalists.

And? The Archibald has not been without controversy. Australia being Australia, the Archibald has been incredibly white and male. It would take until 2020 for an Indigenous artist to win the prize (Vincent Namatjira with his portrait of Adam Goodes), the same year the Packing Room prize was also awarded to an Indigenous artist for the first time (Meyne Wyatt’s self portrait.) Nora Heysen was the first woman to win the prize in 1938 but it would be two decades before another would when Judy Cassab won in 1960.

Other One of the rules of the Archibald is that there must be at least one life sitting which was difficult for one of this years finalists, Shaun Gladwell, and his portrait of Julian Assange.
