In response to Jojo’s recent interview in which she clearly displayed no knowledge of her queer elders, Autostraddle also published a list of 58 Icons and Rising Stars of Gay Pop, with some figures dating back to the 1950s. The list includes acts like Troye Sivan, Janelle Monae, Scissor Sisters, David Bowie, and Boy George. The article ends saying, “We will forgive JoJo for telling a reporter that she told her management she wanted to invent a new style of music called “gay pop” and instead note that she is part of a larger legacy and an ongoing cultural tradition.”
