Earlier this month, Mayim Bialik announced in an Instagram post that she had been “informed” by Sony that she would no longer be hosting Jeopardy.

As the holiday break begins in Hollywood, I have some Jeopardy! news. Sony has informed me that I would no longer be hosting the syndicated version of Jeopardy! I am incredibly honored to have been nominated for a primetime Emmy for hosting this year and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the Jeopardy! family. For all those who have supported me through this incredible journey and to the fans, contestants, writers, stars and crew of America’s Favorite Quiz Show, thank you.

Bialik had been alternating hosting the popular game show with former Jeopardy! superchampion Ken Jennings. Jennings commented that he was taken “off-guard” by the change, but said “I can’t speak to her decision-making process”

Today, TheRinger.com posted a deep dive into the possible sequence of events leading up to Bialik’s firing, with input from “sources close to the production”:

    * Bialik was hired quickly after the previous host, Mike Richards (who had replaced the late, longtime beloved host Alex Trebek), resigned suddenly after accusations of sexual harassment and assault against him surfaced as well as offensive comments he’d made in years previous
    * She was originally supposed to be the full time host but she was busy starring in a Fox sitcom called Call Me Kat, which if you’ve heard of that you’re better than me. So they grabbed Ken to have him host the shows when she was away filming
    * The thinking in hiring her was that she was a well known actor, she had a Ph.D. in neuroscience so the producers considered her “brainy”, and she had previously been a guest host for two weeks
    * However, Bialik had in the past bragged about never watching television, and shortly after her hire she expressed surprise at the attention the show got: “Like, who knew that people were so passionate about who hosts Jeopardy!?”
    * Some fans complained about some of her mannerisms as host, like calling the first round “single Jeopardy”, being too giggly with contestants, and waiting too long to tell contestants whether they’d gotten the right answer; others claimed these criticisms were based in misogyny and wouldn’t have been raised with a male host
    * The Jeopardy! producers prefer the show and its respective hosts to remain apolitical and controversy-free. Mayim didn’t fit that bill, having spoken out in the past against vaccines, criticized “cancel culture”, and defended Israel. Also, in 2017 she published an op-ed in the New York Times implying that women needed to be more modest and less flirtatious in order to avoid being sexually harassed
    * Unfortunately, what really pissed off the Jeopardy producers was the one actual good thing she did; refusing to host the show in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strike. Jennings continued to host in her absence, leading to accusations of scabbing
    * Wil Wheaton, Mayim’s friend and former co-star, wrote a long pissed off post calling Jennings out, because Wil Wheaton is the only person who still thinks anyone cares what Wil Wheaton thinks
    * Meanwhile, Jennings’ hosting tenure started off rocky, with him being introduced as “hosting Jeopardy!” whereas Mayim’s introduction called her “the host of Jeopardy.” However, he quickly improved and impressed both audiences and the producers alike
    * After Jennings had hosted by himself for the better part of a year, the decision was made to let Bialik go and retain Jennings as sole host
    * There’s some talk that Sony may have been trying to keep Bialik on in some capacity but according to TMZ (I know) she wanted “all or nothing” and so they let her go
    * Jennings says he’s happy to host the show until he’s “a very, very old man”
