Timmy’s Wonka debuted on top this weekend at the box office with $39 million from 4,200 theaters. A slow start for the $125 million film, but films released through the second half of December do wind up sticking around more often that their other months counterparts so we’ll see how this one plays out. And so far internationally, its taken in a sizable $112.4 million for a worldwide debut of $151.4 million. Its received an A- Cinemascore, and a 3.5 on Letterboxd.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes followed in 2nd, dropping 38% to $5.8 million. The Boy and the Heron tumbled to 3rd, dropping 60% to $5.2 million. So far the film has taken in $99 million worldwide. Godzilla Minus One ($4.88M, -43%) and Trolls Band Together ($4M, -34%) rounded out the Top 5.
Renaissance took another tumble in weekend 3, falling 63% to $2 million and losing 819 theaters in the process. So far its grossed $30.8 million. Poor Things expanded to 82 theaters and took in $1.27 million.
In indie debuts, American Fiction opened in 7 theaters to $226k, a $32k pta. The Zone of Interest opened in 4 theaters for $124k, a $31k pta. Fiction will continue to expand while Zone of Interest will stay in its 4 theaters until after New Years.
Christmas Weekend is upon us next weekend! Maestro kicks things off on Netflix Wednesday, while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Anyone But You, Migration, All of Us Strangers, The Iron Claw, Rebel Moon Part One, and Memory come Friday.
