The Marvels may have nabbed top spot at the box office this weekend, but that point is the only good thing to come out of its catastrophic debut.
The film took in $47 million from 4,030 theaters. Its the worst opening weekend for the entire MCU. The film also nabbed a B Cinemascore, joining Quantumania and Eternals as having the worst Cinemascore. PostTrak exits weren’t any better, with a 73% positive.
Not only that, but its targeted audience barely showed up: 65% of the audience was male and women over 25 accounted for 22% of total audience.
Internationally the film did just as poorly with $63.3 million from 51 territories for a $110 million global start, another worst-ever for the MCU. A flat-out rejection for a film that cost $220 million to make and another $100 million to promote. And with Hunger Games coming next weekend and taking all the premium screens…. can this even get to $100 million domestically before its run ends?
Five Nights at Freddys ($9 million, -53%), Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour ($5.7 million, -57%), Priscilla ($4.8 million, -5%), and Killers of the Flower Moon ($4.6 million, -32%) rounded out the Top 5.
The Holdovers expanded to 778 theaters and took a 6th place $3.2 million. Dream Scenario debuted in 6 theaters and nabbed $215k, with a weekend best $36k per-theater-average.
Next weekend: The Hunger Games — The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Saltburn, Next Goal Wins, Thanksgiving, Trolls Band Together, Rustin
