SZA, Barbie soundrack songs, and Phoebe Bridgers lede Grammy nominations

Female musicians look poised to dominate on the Grammys stage in 2024. The Recording Academy unveiled the nominees for the 2024 Grammy Awards on Friday (Nov. 09, 2023), with women outperforming their male counterparts in all of the leading categories.

The leading contender is SZA, who scored a total of nine nominations — including record, album and song of the year — after making a triumphant return to the music industry with her acclaimed sophomore effort, “SOS.” Meanwhile, Phoebe Bridgers scooped up one nod for her collaboration with SZA and seven as part of indie rock supergroup boygenius, and Victoria Monét followed close behind with seven nominations total.

Not surprisingly, Taylor Swift also continued her world-dominating year with six nods, tied with Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo. And the Recording Academy certainly wasn’t immune to the charms of Barbie, with the soundtrack for Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster racking up 11 nominations in various categories.

On the flip side, male artists were largely iced out of the Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year categories ― with the exception of five-time winner Jon Batiste. Noticeably absent from most of the major categories were rap and hip-hop artists.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will air Feb. 4 live on CBS and Paramount+ from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
