Lucius is back! Pushed off the side of the Revenge at the end of Our Flag Means Death season one, the lovable scribe played by Nathan Foad was implied to be dead, or eaten by sharks—no matter the winky tweets from the show’s creators. But in the second episode of the show’s new season, which debuted on Max last week, Lucius re-emerges on the Pirate Queen’s ship, complete with a brand new bushy beard.
Lucius has since been reunited with his crewmates and his love, Black Pete (Matthew Maher). But he’s seen things in his time away that will stick with him as the season continues.
Foad, like the rest of the Our Flag Means Death cast, remains on strike as part of SAG-AFTRA, and has not given any interviews since the season began. But during our exclusive visit to the New Zealand set last December, we had the chance to talk to him about Lucius’s emotional return, and how Our Flag Means Death became “the luckiest mistake that’s ever happened.”
New episodes of Our Flag Means Death air Thursdays on Max.
Fans thought you had tragically disappeared into the ocean, and it was bye bye Lucius. You’ve had to keep your reappearance a secret for months now. What’s it like to be back?
It’s been a blast. I’ve really enjoyed doing the second season of the show. When you’re part of a serialized TV show, there’s always the paranoia: what if you’re not going to be able to come back, and what if we don’t get to play these characters again and continue that arc?
What is it like to play this role?
It’s a gift of a part. Particularly in this season, I love that I get really good jokes. It’s goofy and it’s fun. I get big set pieces, but also I’ve been able to really dig in this season a bit more. Season two has required more acting than I had initially anticipated. Lucius has been through some stuff between the first two seasons, and that’s been the joy of the role as well. In the first season, it starts off looking like one thing. He’s this funny sidekick. And then as I’ve peeled back all these different layers, we’ve learned more about him, which is a real gift as an actor.
Without giving too much away, tell us a bit more about Lucius in season two.
I’m on set a lot more with Black Pete, and less with Stede and Blackbeard. This season has been a bit harder. I’ve got some slightly heavier material this season, so I’ve definitely had to dig into the role a bit more.
