Knock Knock. Who’s there? It’s a new box office champ!

After spending 7 weeks dominating the box office, Avatar has been replaced at the top spot with M Night’s Knock at the Cabin. The film grossed $14.2 million from 3,643 theaters on $20 million budget. The film recieved mixed reactions, nabbing a 63 Metacritic score, a C Cinemascore, and a 56% positive from PostTrak. Typical M Night.

80 for Brady followed in 2nd with $12.5 million on a $28 million budget. 80 actually nabbed more tickets sales than Cabin (1.3m vs. 1.1m) due to the film having discounted ticket prices across the country. It scored lower with critics with a 54 on Metacritic, but much higher with audiences with an A- Cinemascore and a 85% positive from PostTrak. 66% of audiences were over 45, with 69% of audiences consisting of women.

Avatar: The Way of Water dropped all the way to 3rd place with $10.8 million followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with $7.95 million. A Man Called Otto rounded on the Top 5 with $4.17 million.

Infinity Pool dropped 64% from last week to gross $900k.

In other new releases, the Jesus freak show The Chosen played its S3 finale in 1,700 theaters and took in $3.6 million.

The domestic box office after 5 weeks into the new year is showing promising signs. Total gross so far is up 48% over the same period last year and will most likely see continuing growth, especially 2 weeks from now.
