The reality show, which first premiered in England and now has counterparts across the globe, centers around a group of singles who move into a luxurious island villa with the hopes of falling in love and winning the $100,000 prize. On their first day, the participants must pair up with one of their costars.
Over time, the duos can uncouple and switch partners. Anyone who ends up single gets eliminated — but viewers can also vote off different participants throughout the season. To make things even more difficult, new additions make their way to the tropical destination to test the islanders’ relationships. In the final week, the at-home audience votes for the winner.
Even though the contestants are living in paradise, they do have a strict set of rules they must follow so they can remain on the show. One of the most serious rules is no violence, bullying or inappropriate language — a guideline that several contestants have broken over the years, including two occasions where certain cast members have been removed from the series after getting into an altercation.
In season 5 of the U.K. show, Sherif Lanre was sent home after he accidentally kicked Molly-Mae Hague in her crotch during a play fight and made an insensitive joke about it after. His exit came nine days after the show’s 2019 premiere. At the time, ITV issued a statement on behalf of Lanre. “In a case of poor judgment, I broke the villa rules and as a result agreed with the producers that it was best for me to leave the villa,” the message read.
Contestants are also not allowed to use their phones while they are filming the reality TV series. While the players’ loved ones used to be able to run their social media accounts while the show aired, a new set of guidelines were introduced regarding social media usage in January 2023.
For the U.K. series, participants are no longer allowed to have active social media profiles while the show airs. The rule change comes from ITV and Lifted Entertainment to protect the television personalities and their families from the negative effects of social media per Variety.
Per the 2023 rules, islanders will also participate in a variety of workshops that will help their overall experience on and after the show. The new initiative includes psychological support, training on how to handle potential negativity on social media, financial management, conversations about the impact of participation on the show and more. There is also an aftercare package that extends support to all contestants following their time on the show and guidance on mutually respectful behavior in relationships.

No Social Media
Contestants on the reality show are not allowed to have their phones or allow anyone to update their social media accounts while away, according to a new rule ITV instated in January 2023. (Previously, a friend or family member could run a contestant’s socials while they were at the villa.)
As of season 9, the show’s participants must have their accounts remain dormant throughout their time on the show.

No Drugs
The reality series has a zero tolerance policy for drugs, including steroids. The applicants are drug tested during the casting process. Prescription medication is allowed as long as it is pre-approved by the production crew. Contestants may also smoke cigarettes but only in designated areas.

Not Too Much Alcohol
While contestants can indulge in a cocktail or two, excessive drinking is not permitted on the show. Season 4 alum Dr. Alex George told Marie Claire in June 2022 that production was “very strict” and “four small cans of beer” was the daily allowance at the time.

No Bullying, Violence or Inappropriate Language
Inappropriate language applies it to racial slurs, homophobic and aggressive comments. Also included in this rule is sexual harassment. Throughout the show’s history, two stars have been removed for breaking this rule. U.K. season 2’s Malia Arkian was forced to leave following an altercation with Kady McDermott while season 5’s Lanre exited the show after kicking Hague in her crotch during a play fight and making an insensitive joke about the situation afterward.
In January 2023, Variety revealed that new contestants will now get guidance and training workshops that center around respectful behavior in relationships ahead of entering the villa.

No Branded Clothing
The reality stars are not allowed to wear specific items of clothing or accessories with certain branding and logos in it — unless it was approved. In each season, the show gets a wardrobe sponsor and participants can select items to wear from there.

No Masturbating in the Shower
In July 2019, Metro reported that producers had to tell the male contestants to refrain from masturbating while in the shower after one contestant complained about it. While they can’t partake in self pleasure while bathing, they reportedly can enjoy some alone time on the toilet instead.

No Nudity
Since the villa is a public place, nudity is not permitted and clothes must be worn at all times.

No Clocks
The islanders are not allowed to know what time it is while they film the reality series. There are no clocks and watches in the villa — and even appliances that display the time are covered up. Producers specifically wake up the contestants each morning and tell them when it is time for bed. Season 5 U.K. alum Michael Griffiths told British GQ that he and his costars attempted “to make a sundial” to try to figure out the time of day.
