Wonka stayed on top at the first weekend at the box office for 2024. The film took in $14.4 million, a 36% decrease from last weekend. Its domestic total now stands at $164.65 million, with its worldwide total blazing past $400 million with $417.7M.
Blumhouse horror Night Swim debuted in 2nd with $12 million domestic and $17.7 million worldwide, a far cry from M3gan’s $30M debut this weekend last year. Audience reception was poor, landing a C Cinemascore, a 26% recommend from PostTrak, and a 2.1 on Letterboxd. Luckily for Blumhouse, it only came with a $15 million price tag.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom dropped 42% to 3rd with $10.6 million, officially crossing the $100M mark. Migration followed in 4th, dropping 40% to $10.2 million. Its own domestic total stands at $77.8 million. Anyone But You rounded out the Top 5, jumping 9% from last week(!!!) to $9.5 million. So far its grossed $43.7 million.
Meanwhile, The Color Purple continues dropping like a rocket, falling 59% to a 7th place $4.76 million. The Iron Claw followed close behind with $4.52 million, dropping only 3%. American Fiction expanded to 114 theaters, grossing $1 million, while All of Us Strangers expanded to 42 theaters and took in $425k.
2023 ended at the box office with $8.93 billion and 848 million tickets sold, a 20% increase from 2022, but still down 20% from 2019.
