WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD for the season two premiere of The Celebrity Traitors!

Richard E. Grant made a pretty major mistake almost immediately after being selected as a Traitor!

The 69-year-old actor is competing on the second season of the BBC reality series, which returned on Thursday night (October 1) with Claudia Winkleman once again serving as host.

During the premiere, Claudia secretly selected Richard and Maya Jama as the first two Traitors of the season. However, Richard apparently got a little too excited about landing the coveted role and accidentally told his fellow contestants the truth at the bar.

How did Richard E. Grant reveal he was a Traitor?

After the contestants left the Round Table, comedian Joe Lycett started asking people whether they were playing as a Faithful or a Traitor.

When Joe turned the question on Richard, the actor simply responded, “A Traitor.”

His answer immediately stunned the group, but Richard initially continued to play along, asking what the point of being in the game was if he wasn’t a Traitor.

The confession was so unexpected that some of the other celebrities seemed to assume he had to be joking. Jerry Hall, who has known Richard for decades, was among those who questioned whether he would actually reveal such important information if it were true.

Once he had time to process what happened, Richard acknowledged in a confessional that the excitement of being selected had gotten the better of him.

“Well that may be the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life. I was so thrilled to have been chosen as a Traitor, that in my unguarded excitement, I said, Of course, I’m a Traitor. I clearly need to diffuse all the heat that’s coming in my direction. Oh, brother!” he admitted.

Richard‘s mistake became one of the biggest talking points from the premiere, which attracted an average overnight audience of 8.9 million viewers in the U.K., nearly three million more than the first celebrity season’s debut.

The Celebrity Traitors airs Thursday and Friday nights on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
