The Basic Instinct star, 68, has confessed she’s always loved the idea of stepping behind the camera to take charge behind the scenes, but she’s convinced being a woman stopped her from taking on those kind of jobs when she was younger and she’s now “too tired” to accept a role which involves solving other people’s problems for them.
She told Variety: “I wanted to direct. But I do have that troubling vagina issue that got in the way of being allowed to have jobs or be paid fairly for them or be considered to have an intelligent point of view …
“Now I have the troubling postmenopausal problem that makes me feel too tired to put up with people’s bulls***t in order to take a directing position. I would prefer if they just kept their opinions about that to themselves while I live a happy life.”
In the interview, Sharon went on to credit late Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher with showing her how to write contracts for her acting roles and it has helped her enormously over the years.
She explained: “Carrie Fisher taught me how to write my contract, thank God, a hundred years ago because [her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds] taught her.
“And then the studios still want to give me a hard time. ‘You can’t have that in your contract.’ Well, guess what? Carrie did, and so did Debbie, and so do I.
“And that is the power of women, right there, ladies. Read your contract, because the agents that work at your agency, they work for the studios, not for you. God love them, but that’s the reality.”
It comes after Sharon opened up about her personal life and revealed she’s been “celibate for quite a while now” because her priorities have shifted.
She told Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast: “I‘m a really good girlfriend, but I haven’t been a girlfriend in a long time.
“And I’ve been a girlfriend to bad boyfriends, and I’ve been a girlfriend to good boyfriends. I’ve had good luck and bad luck and no luck at all.
“For quite a long time I’ve had no luck at all. I’ve been celibate for quite a while now because I’m just at the point where I really only want to be with someone that I care for.”
Sharon – who has adopted sons Roan, 26, Laird, 21, and Quinn, 20 – noted that now her children are grown up, she is interested in “someone that’s my companion, not just someone to have sex with”.
She added: “I’m kind of bored with that. I’m in the no luck at all phase right now. The phase you need to be willing to be in to have the thing that I really want.”
