Hayden Panettiere starred in a spot for PETA just before her death at 36.
The animal rights organization revealed that the actress filmed a campaign weeks before her passing, in which she “crammed herself into a bathtub for a raw new campaign protesting marine parks like SeaWorld, who sentence dolphins to a lifetime of suffering and loneliness in captivity.”
PETA Honors Hayden Panettiere’s Legacy of Advocacy
Here’s more, from PETA:
Today, in tribute to Panettiere’s life and legacy of compassion, PETA is sharing the ad and moving video encouraging everyone to honor her memory by doing as she asked: refusing to buy a ticket to any facility that condemns these sensitive animals to a tiny concrete tank.
The campaign marks a poignant final chapter in Panettiere’s fierce advocacy for marine mammals, which grabbed headlines around the world in 2007, when the then-18-year-old paddled into the blood-stained waters of Taiji, Japan, and confronted dolphin hunters during an annual slaughter—a moment captured in the Oscar-winning documentary The Cove.

What Did Hayden Panettiere Say About Dolphins in Captivity?
“Can you imagine their frustration, their trauma, their depression? All that is important and crucial for their well-being is ripped away. We can end this. You and me,” she says.
“In their ocean homes they can be with their families, dive deep to escape the hot sun and enjoy the rain on their backs… all of that is taken from them when they are confined to small tanks.”
From the organization: “Across the U.S., hundreds of dolphins are forced to live in small barren enclosures where they are forced to perform meaningless tricks or are exploited in stressful tourist encounters, in which they are repeatedly touched and harassed by strangers who have invaded the only space they have, with no way to escape. Many were abducted from their ocean homes and stolen from their families decades ago, while others were born in captivity and have never experienced the joy of swimming in the open ocean.”

“Vow today to never go to a marine park that keeps dolphins in extreme captivity. Together, we can end this cruelty,” she says in the spot. See the moving ad above.
