We’re less than one month away from Flavor Flav’s SHE Weekend, which is taking over Las Vegas for four days in July to celebrate female champions.
The hip-hop icon is hosting more than 100 female athletes in his hometown to celebrate them in the way they deserve to be treated. Ahead of the event, Flavor Flav and his manager Rhiannon Rae Ellis traveled to France to talk about SHE Weekend during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and they opened up about the inspiration for it all.
Flav and Rhiannon chatted with Evin Shutt, the global CEO of 72andSunny, to share everything fans need to know about SHE Weekend.
Flav gave all the credit to Rhiannon. “It all started from the mastermind over here… It was a very, very, very good idea to say, ‘You know what? Trump is doing these girls bad. Flav, bring them to Vegas.’ That’s where it all came from,” he said.
The idea for the Vegas celebration happened after Trump joked about feeling obligated to invite the U.S. Women’s Hockey Team to the White House after their Olympics gold medal win, an invite that they declined. He begrudgingly said that he’d “probably be impeached” if he didn’t invite the women alongside the men’s team, who also won a gold medal.
Flav added, “I was praying and praying to God that Trump saw it. You know what I’m saying? Because he needs to know that people got feelings, man. These girls are out here busting their ass to make the United States look good. Why can’t they get the same treatment as the guys? And that’s why my girls are coming out to see me. The guys, they did their thing. Trump had the guys over at the White House and gave them McDonald’s. Well, my girls are going to eat way better than that. We going to be having shrimp, steak, lobster. We going to be partying. We going to be parading. We going to be celebrating.”
SHE Weekend, representing “Sports, Hospitality, & Entertainment,” will begin with a parade down the strip on Thursday, July 16, leading to a free concert on Toshiba Plaza. All of the women will attend Backstreet Boys and Ed Sheeran concerts, with meet and greets at both shows.
In addition to female Olympians, Flavor Flav has also invited champions like the Professional Women’s Hockey League winners from Montreal and Kentucky Derby winner Cherie DeVaux, who is the first female trainer to ever win.
During the interview at Cannes Lions, Flav and Rhiannon gave shout outs to the companies who are making the weekend possible. MGM Resorts has provided more than 100 hotel rooms to host all of the athletes traveling to Las Vegas and Delta, the official airline of Team USA, is flying them out with free flights. 72andSunny partnered with SHE Weekend to provide all of the branding and graphics for the event.
