Obsession continues to be a hit, and it’s setting new records.
The Curry Barker-helmed horror movie set a new record by Monday (May 18), becoming the cheapest movie to top the box office in 17 years since 2009’s Paranormal Activity.
The movie moved into the top spot by the start of the week, beating out heavy-hitters like Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Mortal Kombat II at the box office to bring in an additional $2.9 million, for an overall haul of over $27 million so far on a reported $750,000 budget, per Forbes.
It’s now on track to become of the biggest horror movies of 2026, with plenty of calls for awards season acclaim.
There’s especially praise for lead Inde Navarrette, with multiple outlets calling for her performance to get awards attention and deeming it “genuinely Oscar worthy.”
The indie horror movie, which currently commands a glowing 95% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes among critics and 94% score among audiences, just hit theaters on Friday (May 15).
In the movie, after breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart (Navarrette), a hopeless romantic (Michael Johnston) finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.
The movie also originally had a different ending, which they’ve revealed.
