Helena Bonham Carter is no longer set to star in The White Lotus season 4.
The Oscar-nominated actress has dropped out of the popular HBO series, just a little over a week after production started on the French Riviera, per Deadline.
An HBO spokesperson said that the character created by Mike White for Helena “did not align once on set,” and the role is now being “rethought” and “rewritten.” It will be recast.

“HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon,” said the spokesperson.
This situation is a rare case of recasting as Mike is known for creating characters and casting carefully to make sure they are the right fit.
“But as production started and Carter shot her first scenes, White, who writes and directs each episode, felt that her character as originally conceived was not what it should be, sources said. With the role believed to be central to the Season 4 story, a decision was made to rework it and recast it,” notes Deadline.
Filming is still ongoing, with some scheduling being adjusted to allow time for rewrites and a recast.
