Sources told Deadline that the pilot was “not perfect.” Furthermore, lauded director Chloé Zhao was on board to direct the series, but, the site also noted an issue there. Apparently, the Hamnet director’s “sensibility may not have been the perfect match for the reboot.”
Despite passing, executives apparently are still “high on the Buffy IP” and have “plans to regroup and mull a possible new incarnation of the beloved franchise.”
Sarah Michelle, meanwhile, was apparently surprised by the streamer’s decision to pass on the show at this stage.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer began as a 1992 film written by Joss Whedon before debuting as a TV series starring Sarah, now 48, in 1997. The story was set to continue with a new chapter in the Buffyverse, written by Nora and Lila Zuckerman. Ryan Kiera Armstrong was attached to star, and she reacted to the news of the cancellation as well.
