Are you experiencing post-Olympics blues? Or did you miss them all together? Fear not, you’re not alone!

While we wait for the Paralympics to start up, let’s look back at some of the memorable moments from this year’s Olympics – from great wins to great losses and all the absurd situations in-between!

Let’s slide into the post 🛷⛸🥌
    (fair warning: long post ahead)

ARE SKI JUMPERS CHEATING BY ENHANCING THEIR PENISES?
    Ski Jumping Penis Accusations
We kicked off the Olympics with this somewhat absurd story. Claims were made that ski jumpers were injecting their penises with hyaluronic acid. Ski jumping involves a lot of aerodynamics and there are very strict rules about how loose-fitting the suits athletes wear can be. Injecting the penis would increase its size at the time of getting the suit measured before competition and decrease it by the time it’s time to fly. Hence resulting in athletes being given bigger, looser suits – which would make them jump farther.

LINDSEY VONN AND THE LOST ACL
    Lindsey Vonn Crashes
In the last race before the Olympics, US alpine skier Lindsey Vonn fell and tore her ACL. Vonn famously came out of retirement to try for a medal at the 2026 Olympics. Not one to give up, Vonn decided to forge ahead and compete without her ACL. Unfortunately, in the Women’s Downhill she hit a gate and crashed massively, breaking her leg badly. She later revealed on social media that a doctor just about managed to save her leg from amputation, she’s still wheelchair-bound, and the leg will need at least a year to heal.

    BIATHLON MEDALIST CONFESSES AFFAIR
    Biathlon Cheater
Norwegian biathlon athlete Sturla Holm Lægreid won a bronze medal, and then used his post-race interview to confess to cheating on his girlfriend of six months only three months into their relationship. He thought perhaps if he ‘publicly fell on his sword’, she’d forgive him. Spoiler alert: She did not.

Lægreid would go on to win another four medals after this interview. He won three silver and two bronze in total, medaling in all the events he competed in.

From one cheating scandal to another:
THE BOOP THAT ROCKED THE WORLD
Boop Gate (Canada Curling Cheating Scandal)
Wild scenes emerged from the curling hall as Sweden accused Canada of cheating by touching the stone after letting the handle go (not allowed). Canada VEHEMENTLY denied this (with F-bombs!), only to get caught in 4k by Sweden. Turns out they were indeed touching the stone.

Canada then accused Sweden of intentionally setting up cameras in order to catch them out, which… well, yes. Sweden did. Because apparently Canada have a long history of doing this and getting away with it.

The Canada finger man became a meme, taking the Internet by storm, and Canada went on to win gold. Cheaters prevail!

DIVA DOWN (and one adorable Panda routine)!
    Diva Down: Ilia Malinin Falling
The Men’s Figure Skating took a shocking turn as self-proclaimed “Quad God” and gold medal favourite Ilia Malinin fell TWICE during his free skating routine, landing him in 8th place. A lot of the other competitors also fell, making Mikhail Shaidorov from Kazakhstan – who nailed his routine – the unexpected winner!

In the wake of his win, a different routine from the Tokyo 2020 games emerged, where Shaidorov performed a whole figure skating routine dressed as a panda! (I can’t embed it, but do yourself a favour and look it up)

    DIVA DOWN 2: CROSS-COUNTRY EDITION

The Swedish cross-country women had dominated the competition when it was time the for the 4×7.5km Relay, and they were set to take an easy gold medal. Unfortunately, the weather during the competition was less than ideal and the conditions on track were extremely tricky, which Ebba Andersson got to experience firsthand. As she was skiing down a hill she fell, did a whole somersault, and broke the binding on her ski. With no support team close by, she had to continue on with one ski until a coach finally came running with a replacement ski. The particular turn on this hill was subsequently nicknamed “The Ebba Turn” by commentators.

Despite this misfortune Sweden still managed to snag themselves a silver medal in the event. Ebba Andersson also went on to win gold in the Women’s Classical 50km a week later.

Speaking of gold medals and cross-country, I sort of have to mention this next guy

HISTORY MAKER 1: JOHANNES HØSFLOT KLÆBO WINS ALL THE GOLD
    Johannes Klæbo Final Sprint
Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo became historic when he a) became the person with the most gold medals in Winter Olympic history (11) and b) won the most gold medals by any Winter Olympian in the same Olympics (6). He won gold in all of the Men’s Cross-Country Events.

Klæbo also became a meme for his unique way of accelerating up the final hill during races, showcasing great speed and a somewhat distinctive form.

But he wasn’t the only one to make history…

HISTORY MAKER 2: EILEEN GU BECOMES MOST AWARDED FREESTYLE SKIER
    Eileen Gu Winning
Chinese freestyle skier Eileen Gu added another three medals to her collection – one gold medal (Half-pipe) and two silver medals (Big Air and Slopestyle). This puts her total of Olympic medals at six (three golds, three silver) and makes her the most decorated freestyle skier in Olympic history.

HISTORY MAKER 3: BRAZIL WINS FIRST EVER WINTER OLYMPIC MEDAL
    Lukas Braathen Winning
Brazilian alpine skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen became historic when he took gold in the Men’s Giant Slalom competition. It is the first Winter Olympic medal in not only Brazil’s history, but also in South American history!

And speaking of Alpine skiing and dramatic events

    A WALK INTO THE WOODS
    Walk into the woods
Norwegian alpine skier Atle Lie McGrath had a decent lead before going into the second round of the Men’s Slalom competition. Unfortunately he straddled a gate pretty soon into it and immediately saw his chances of medaling burst into flames. As the Canadian coaches celebrated the gold medal right next to him, McGrath threw his poles away, took off his skis, and then walked off the course. He kept walking, until he finally lay down at the edge of the woods to deal with his disappointment.

The video and pictures of his defeat quickly went viral, with people online comparing him to that one penguin heading off into the mountains.

On a somewhat sadder note, McGrath was told his grandfather had passed away after the Opening Ceremony, and he wanted to win in his grandfather’s honour.

SKI MOUNTAINEERING (SKIMO) MAKES ITS OLYMPIC DEBUT
    Olympic Ski Mountaineering
There is no end to the competitions you can do on skis, apparently. SkiMo, which was added to the Olympic program this year, saw athletes ascending steep slopes on skis, running up stairs with their skis on their backs, removing and adding ‘skins’ to said skis, and skiing down slalom courses in a sprint event. Reactions to the new sport were… somewhat mixed. I personally thought it was fun.

Spain’s Oriol Cardona became the first gold medallist on the Men’s side, while Marianne Fatton from Switzerland won gold in the Women’s competition. France won the Mixed Team Event.

I GUESS I HAVE TO MENTION HOCKEY (OR DO I?)
Jack Hughes on the ground with broken teeth
Something something USA hockey dude broke his teeth and then scored match-winning goal in the Canada-USA Men’s Hockey final something something celebration Trump call scandal something something hockey men suck something something

    And last, but not least:
AN UNEXPECTED BUT VERY GOOD COMPETITOR
    Dog finish line photo
Two-year-old wolfdog Nazgul stole the show as he decided to gate-crash the Women’s Cross Country Team Sprint. He zoomed down the homestretch to the finish line alongside the other competitors and became an Olympic star in the process!
