A confused woman wants to know if it would be wrong to go on a “once in a lifetime” vacation that she booked after her sister threatened to cut off contact.

Taking to Reddit‘s popular “Am I the A——” forum, the woman explained that she’s nearing her 30s and wanted to do some world traveling before entering the next phase of her life and starting a family of her own.

One of the first trips on her schedule for 2026 is to the Maldives, and it’s already booked with a nonrefundable deposit paid.

However, the Redditor said that her sister is causing a scene over the trip for an unexplainable reason, and she can’t figure out if she needs to cancel.

In her post, the woman explained that a trip to the Maldives is “something I have wanted to do since I was a kid.”

However, her sister is angry as it is where she went on her honeymoon, and she doesn’t want to share the tropical destination.

The woman wrote that “quite recently my sister has said that I shouldn’t be going to the Maldives as this is where she went [on] her honeymoon. I never thought that going here because she had her honeymoon there was an issue and she nor anyone else ever previously expressed that this would be an issue.”

Things are escalating after her sister sent a text message saying that she would “cut her off” if the trip wasn’t cancelled. Now the women’s parents are “taking [the sister’s] side.”

Apparently, they think it is “really hurtful” for their daughter to visit the honeymoon spot.

In updates to her original post, the woman added that she wasn’t even visiting the same part of the Maldives as her sister, who honeymooned “at one of the more expensive resort islands.”

As for her parents’ defensive reaction, she wrote that they apparently think “there are plenty of other countries I can go to.”

She wanted to know if it was in poor taste to continue with her vacation plans, and many fellow Redditors rushed to encourage her.

“You don’t get to block off an entire country for forever just because you went there on your honeymoon,” one person wrote, adding, “Literally even if you stayed in the exact same hotel and exact same room as her and her hubby it shouldn’t be an actual problem for your sister.”

Another confused person wrote that they didn’t “understand how someone could get upset about you visiting the same country where they had their honeymoon.”

“How does your trip affect them? Do they think it devalues their own experience? They are being so self-centered! And your parents are also being ridiculous,” they wrote, hypothesizing that the original poster was the “‘easy’ child who usually has to cave to you sister to make problems go away.”

Continuing, they asked, “Is your sister always this competitive? Because if she is, it might be a relief for her to cut you off over something so petty.”

Yet another person pointed out how unrealistic the sister’s demand was, sarcastically writing, “My wife and I went to Jamaica. I would appreciate it if all of you never went to Jamaica. I have now claimed it as mine. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

One Redditor even shared a proposed message that the woman should share with her family: “It is hurtful and concerning that you consider our relationship so unimportant as to hold it hostage over something as simple as my travel plans, which are in no way hurting or competing with anyone. This suggests that any number of choices I make in the future will put our relationship at risk, and I am unwilling to organize my life around illogical perceived offences. I look forward to sharing stories of my upcoming adventure to the Maldives with the important people in my life when I return; it is up to you whether you will be counted in that group.”
