One month after Diane Keaton died at the age of 79, The Family Stone writer and director Thomas Bezucha revealed he’s working on a sequel to the 2005 movie in honor of the late star.

Life & Style breaks down everything to know about The Family Stone sequel, including why Bezucha feels inspired to add more to the story.

‘The Family Stone’ Sequel Is in the Works

In November 2025, Bezucha told CNN that he’s working on a follow-up to the beloved Christmas movie. Keaton starred in the film as Sybil Stone, a mother whose family’s life was turned upside down when she revealed her breast cancer diagnosis.

“I’ve been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already,” Bezucha told the outlet, referring to Keaton’s death. “Mentally, I’ve been spending time in that house where I’ve been missing her for a while already.”

Bezucha added that Keaton’s death made it even important to release the sequel, explaining that he wants to do justice to her memorable work in the first film. With the sequel, Bezucha said he ultimately wants to “do a good job by the rest of the cast” and “honor [Keaton] even more.”

While Bezucha implied he’s been working on the sequel for a while, he said he’s only interested in making another movie if the original cast is on board. “I’m not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan,” he said.

Bezucha has already approached the cast with the idea for a sequel, saying he was met with “unanimously positive responses.” However, “no one has officially signed on and the film has not yet been officially greenlit.”

Who Else Starred in ‘The Family Stone’?

In addition to Keaton, the ensemble cast included Sarah Jessica Parker, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Reaser, Craig T. Nelson and more.

The statement continued with the family highlighting what the late actress was passionate about. “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” they said.

Keaton was the proud mother to two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, whom she adopted in 1996 and 2001.
