Luke Bryan recently opened up about his parenting style during an appearance on The Turf podcast on October 28, where he made it clear that he’s not the overbearing type when it comes to raising his kids.

“I’m not a helicopter parent,” the country star said, emphasizing that his goal is to support his sons in whatever passions they choose to pursue.

The country star shares two sons, Thomas “Bo” Boyer and Tatum “Tate” Christopher, with his wife, Caroline Boyer Bryan. The couple are also guardians to three of their nieces and nephews, Jordan, Kris, and Til, whom they adopted after the children’s mom (Luke’s sister) Kelly Bryan Cheshire passed away.

When it comes to 15-year-old Tate, the country singer revealed there’s been a big shift in his interests. Once focused on baseball, Tate has now turned his attention to golf.

“With Tate, chasing golf seems like the right thing to do. But if he comes to me and says, ‘Dad, I’m burnt out on golf, I wanna hit the gym, I wanna work on my curveball again,’ man, I’ll be the guy — we’ll go work on the curveball.”

Bryan added that his approach is rooted in letting his kids follow what makes them happy: “It’s about their wants, their wishes, their goals, and their happiness. If he wants to go chip and putt for three hours, great. But if one day he doesn’t, I’ll say, ‘Let’s go fish, let’s have a day off.’”

Adding more about his parenting style with Tate, Bryan said they still make time to improve his game — just with balance.

“When I’m done with this, I’m meeting him at the course. His putting and chipping isn’t where we want it to be, so we’re gonna work on that. But ya know, I’m trying to do all this and not be psycho dad too,” he said with a laugh. “I don’t think I’m psycho dad. We all know what those look like.”

When opening up about his sister’s death, Luke told Anderson Cooper on November 20, “I never really explained what happened to my sister, there’s some misinformation out there on the internet and I think some people wonder what happened and they think that we’ve tried to cover it up,” he said.

“There is a very, very small percentage of people who die for no reason – and it’s called sudden death syndrome and that’s essentially what they described my sister’s death as.”
