“I thought it would be funny, I was talking to Amy Sedaris. Before I got the script, I thought it would be really funny if Carrie came up to the counter and I was like, ‘Oh, hey Carrie. You’re still past due on your bill,’” Andy said. “I wanted to think of some shady improv line to break her up, but it turned out that was not the scene. It was really just me walking by her as it were, and so when we shot it, now it is documented what a bad actor I am and it was really, you know, when we shot it, I think the line in the script was just like, ‘Oh, hey Carrie. I’ll be with you in a sec,’ and she’s like, ‘Okay, Daniel,’ and that was kind of it.”
“Then we started to do it and it’s very, shooting these shows for me is very difficult. You have to literally walk four steps, say your line at a particular spot, and then keep going,” he continued. “There’s a lot of blocking involved and I just don’t, I’m not good at it, but so she, so I started to do it a couple times, and then [showrunner] Michael Patrick King came out and said, ‘Look, why don’t you say to her, ‘Hey, Carrie. I’m slammed. I’ll be with you in a minute.’’ So, I was like, ‘Okay.’”
“So, we did it a couple times and when I tell you, I was marching out and I’m like, ‘Carrie, I am slammed. I’m gonna be with you in a minute,’ and kept going, and so Michael Patrick King comes out after we do it twice and he goes, ‘This is a really pivotal scene for Carrie.’ He didn’t tell me, but now I know that she had just had a big fight with Aidan [John Corbett] and it was a whole thing.”
“So he goes, ‘You’re stealing focus from Carrie.’ He goes, ‘The episode title should now be called ‘Daniel’s Busiest Day,’ and it’s not about Daniel’s busiest day. Keep it on Carrie.’ I was like, ‘Oh, okay, okay.’ He’s like, ‘Bring it down,’ and then everybody wanted to get their hooks in me and tell me how to do it, and SJ’s like, ‘Andy, do it right here. You have to say the line here,’” Andy recalled. “It was very specific, and I was saying it in the wrong place. I was just a disaster, but it was so funny, the idea that it was Daniel’s busy day, so the result that you saw, that’s me kind of downplaying it. I think that was kind of the best that they could get.”
If you missed it, Andy is set to co-host an upcoming reunion for a non-Bravo show!
