Gwyneth Paltrow dated and eventually became engaged to Brad Pitt, whom she was with from 1994 until their breakup in 1997.
According to Amy Odell’s forthcoming book Gwyneth: The Biography (and via People), the actress and Goop founder met Pitt in 1994 at an audition for Legends of the Fall. While he got the part, she didn’t, but he later suggested she play his wife in 1995’s Se7en. At the same time, Paltrow received an offer to play opposite Keanu Reeves in Feeling Minnesota and, unsure of which part to take, she asked a friend who told her, “Well, who do you want to date, Brad Pitt or Keanu Reeves?” Paltrow chose Se7en while Cameron Diaz took Feeling Minnesota; sure enough, Pitt and Paltrow did develop a romance, walking “around the set holding hands” and smoking “cigarettes together outside their trailers, Gwyneth holding hers like a thirties movie star,” Odell wrote.
After Emma’s release, Paltrow went over to her makeup artist and friend Kevyn Aucoin’s house and “cried about Pitt multiple times,” Odell wrote. “He wanted to be with her but seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received.” Aucoin gave Paltrow frank advice: “You really need to end this,” Odell wrote that he told her.
