The 33-year-old built quite the campaign, going against former governor Andrew Cuomo, with the two coming to a head as votes were cast on Tuesday (June 24).

“Tonight was not our night. He deserved it. He won,” he reportedly told his supporters.

Cuomo also credited Mamdani with running “a really smart and good and impactful campaign.”

The NYC mayoral primary was voted using a ranked choice system, meaning voters had to rank each candidate in order of preference from first to last.

If one candidate is the voted first choice with more than 50% of voters, they will win the race outright, but if it’s less than 50%, the winner will be chosen by the ranking.

Since Zohran leads 43.5% of the vote at the time of this post, and Andrew has 36.4%, he is the projected winner.

Should Zohran Mamdani win the mayoral election, he will become the city’s Muslim and Indian American mayor.

The general election will take place in November.
