Karina of the massively successful kpop group aespa, is embroiled in some controversy.
The basics:
-Karina wore a red jacket with the number 2 on it, which signaled strongly to the Korean conservative group. Kim Moon-Soo, the conservative People Power Party’s presidential contender, uses the color red and ballot number 2.
-She also used a red rose emoji as the caption, which could be a symbol as this is being called the Rose Election.
-She took the picture down, but only apologized on the social media platform, Bubble, saying “I’m truly sorry for making My (aespa’s fandom) worry. I had absolutely no political intent.”
-There is a rumor that she did this after the son of Representative Lee Jae-myung, the liberal Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, was accused of making sexually harassing remarks about her online, but I can’t find any sources for that.
-People are also blaming this on her being Catholic.
-SM finally released a statement of their own:
“This is SM Entertainment.
We apologize for causing concern due to our artist Karina’s recent post.
Karina simply shared something from her daily life on social media, with absolutely no other intention or purpose. Once she realized that the post could be misunderstood, she immediately deleted it. We sincerely apologize for any distress this may have caused unintentionally.
Our agency will also be more careful and make greater efforts to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. We hope that our artist’s intentions will no longer be misrepresented or consumed with a particular agenda, and we will do our utmost to protect Karina and all of our artists.
