While March was not a magnificent month for movie theaters, April is turning the tides. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which ended up making over initial estimates last weekend at $48 million, made an additional $45 million this weekend. That’s a mere 6% drop between weekends, which is basically unheard of at the box office. So far, it has made $161.6 million globally against its $90 million budget.
In second place was the re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, taking in $25.2 million. This is a very large haul for a 20th anniversary re-release, and it made another $17 million overseas.
Third place belonged to The Accountant 2, which made $24.5 million on an $80 million budget. The first The Accountant film made almost exactly the same amount back in 2016, not adjusted for inflation, on half of the budget.
The Minecraft Movie continues to be an enormous success, bringing in $22.7 million. The film has now brought in $380 million domestically and $816 million globally, and is by the far the most successful film of the year to date.
In fifth place was the new horror adaptation Until Dawn, which made $8 million domestically. The film was not well-reviewed by audiences or critics, but also pulled in another $10.1 million overseas, bringing it to an $18.1 million total on a $15 million budget.
The Legend of Ochi, one of the other new releases this weekend, brought in about $1.4 million from 1100 theaters. The film was a $10 million passion project from director Isaiah Saxon, and is A24’s first foray into family films.
The fact that several R-rated films are doing so well at the box office, as well as having four films in theaters making over $20 million, are great signs for the health of the theater industry.
