When they arrive at the Cannes Film Festival, all the paparazzi turn their lenses towards them. We aren’t talking about the stars of the silver screen but the royals who manage to steal the limelight as soon as they step onto the famous red carpet at the Palais des Festivals. Some of their appearances are legendary. Think of Princess Diana in a splendid sky-blue chiffon gown in 1987, or the legendary meeting between Grace Kelly and Rainier of Monaco, which took place in May 1955, at his princely palace, when Alfred Hitchcock’s muse was attending the festival in France. Many prominent members of Europe’s royal families are regulars at the festival, though Monaco’s ruling dynasty is the best represented: Pierre Casiraghi, his wife Beatrice Borromeo, and his sisters Charlotte Casiraghi and Alexandra of Hanover all regularly attend the festival.
Here’s a look at some of the most famous royal family appearances on the Croisette in Cannes over the years.
