The Yellowstone universe is still growing when it comes to spinoffs from the Paramount+ smash. Life & Style breaks down how CBS is reportedly eyeing a new series featuring Luke Grimes‘ character of Kayce Dutton.

Will There Be a New ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff?

“CBS is developing a spinoff series starring Luke Grimes,” Puck‘s Matt Belloni reported on March 26, 2025. He noted that the show will be a “procedural” series that is “now in preproduction.”

The spinoff will center around John Dutton’s youngest son, Kayce Dutton, who oversaw the family’s Montana ranch after his dad became the state’s governor.

The New ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Is Separate From the Beth Dutton Series

Puck noted that the new spinoff is not related to the one Yellowstone creator and writer Taylor Sheridan is reportedly working on for Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser to reprise their roles of Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.

Deadline reported on December 11, 2024, that the new Beth and Rip series will carry the name Yellowstone in the title and likely feature other characters from the show. Yellowstone came to a close after five seasons with the series finale airing on December 15, 2024.

The outlet said Kelly and Cole had been “negotiating new deals for months,” reporting in August 2024 that the duo was in negotiations for a possible sixth season of Yellowstone, which is now going to be Beth and Rip’s spinoff.

Who Will Appear in Kayce Dutton’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff?

In addition to Luke, it’s highly likely that Kelsey Asbille will return as his wife, Monica Dutton, and Brecken Merrill reprising his role of their son, Tate.

Luke Grimes Said He Would Be Interested in a ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff

“There’s always talks of spinoffs. I’d do it [but] I just don’t understand how it would work once the story ends,” Luke told Esquire in a December 10, 2024 profile, ahead of Yellowstone‘s series finale.

He explained, “Kayce wants to be a cowboy and be happy with his family. He doesn’t want to kill people anymore. He doesn’t want the weight of a huge mega ranch that isn’t sustainable in today’s times. He wants his little slice of heaven. It’s that simple.”

What Happened to Kayce Dutton in the ‘Yellowstone’ Series Finale?

The Yellowstone finale ended with Kayce, Monica and Tate living in a house on a small parcel of the Dutton ranch. He signed over the entire property for $1.25 an acre to Chief Thomas Rainwater and his tribe, despite it being worth several billion dollars.

The price was what Tim McGraw‘s James Dutton paid for the ranch in the prequel 1883, when the Dutton family settled on the land. Both 1883 and 1923 — another Yellowstone prequel — included the prophecy that the land would be returned to Native Americans after seven generations, which Kayce fulfilled.

Luke Grimes Said the Final Season of ‘Yellowstone’ Was the ‘Easiest’ Without Star Kevin Coster

Kevin Costner‘s portrayal of family patriarch John Dutton helped put Yellowstone on the map when it premiered in 2018. However, he began to run into scheduling conflicts while directing and starring in his pet project, Horizon: An America Saga. The Waterworld star confirmed in June 2024 that he wouldn’t be returning for the second half of season 5.

“Hopefully everyone can see that it was time,” Luke told Esquire about Yellowstone coming to a close. “To be really honest, there was a part of Kevin being gone that meant some of the conflict was gone. Obviously, it didn’t make it super fun to be around. Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed.”

He added about the series coming to a close, “It feels like good timing. Seven years is a long time to do anything, and I had never played a character for more than a few months before. I’ve loved all of it. But there is a part of it that — once you read those final episodes — sees that there’s a finality to it.”
