This weekend’s biggest release was Kraven the Hunter, and general audiences apparently did not care one whit. It came in third place with $11 million, even worse than expectations and Sony’s other bomb of the year, Madame Web, on a $110 million budget.
The other big new release of the weekend was the animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which came in fifth place with a $4.6 million take. The budget for this project was a more modest $30 million, and the goal was primarily for the studio to keep the rights to make more Lord of the Rings films, so in that sense, they succeeded.
Moana 2 kept the top spot at the box office with $26.2 million, while Wicked followed close behind with $22.5 million. Wicked is now the top grossing musical adaptation of all time, overcoming previous record holder Grease.
Rounding out the top five was Gladiator II with $7.8 million. Though it’s only made $145.9 million domestically, it is nearing a $400 million take on a global level.
Next weekend brings Mufasa, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Babygirl, with A Complete Unknown and Nosferatu opening a few days later on Christmas.
