To mark Pride Month, Mariah Carey released a “25th Anniversary Expanded Edition” of her 1999 album Rainbow last Friday, June 14 that includes, among other treats, an extended version of the “Rainbow” interlude called “Rainbow’s End,” produced by DJ David Morales.
In an exclusive interview with Vogue, Carey reflected on the album’s significance to her and her LGBTQ+ fanbase and hinted at things to come.
“I was just doing whatever I wanted. I didn’t care who thought it was riskyโand there were some. It didn’t feel risky, even though it probably was a little risquรฉ. It just felt natural to me!”
โข On a supposedly scrapped Lauryn Hill duet: “Now, who said that happened?”
โข On her spray-painted cover outfit: “Don’t even get me started. I never save anything and I’m so mad about it. I just never even thought about saving my stuff, so I have no idea where it is.”
โข On the LGBTQ+ community’s affection for the album: “I appreciate it beyond words. You have no idea how it makes me feel to be a part of something that connects with that community. It’s hard to explain, but it takes away my own feelings of being an outsider. They give me so much love and I wanna receive and give that love right back however I can.”
โข On a follow up to 2018’s Caution: “I’ve actually been working this whole week in the studio with someone who shall remain nameless, but I’m so excited about that. The next album is happening and coming soon, so be patient. Just listen to Rainbow for the time being!”
